Reclaimed Process

When road or driveway paving contractors rip up old asphalt from a roadway or driveway they are reconstructing, they have to have someplace to dump the waste. By bringing it to Dunning Sand & Gravel they can ensure that the old asphalt is recycled into new, reclaimed asphalt.

We take the used asphalt and feed it through an impact crusher. This breaks down the large clumps of asphalt into a material resembling small balls of asphalt.

Likewise, when concrete sidewalks and foundations are demolished the concrete often finds its way to Dunning Sand & Gravel, where it is also fed through the impact crusher and then mixed with the reclaimed asphalt. The result is an inexpensive, but resilient paving material.

Compost

Dunning Sand & Gravel began accepting leaves from gardeners, homeowners, landscapers, and municipalities in the fall of 2011. The leaves are arranged in large windrows and turned over every few weeks. Within six months-to-a-year, the leaves are transformed into highly organic, rich compost available to gardeners, landscapers, homeowners and farmers.

We built a special five acre pad for the windrows, complete with a special drainage system to collect any runoff from the piles of composting leaves. The pad, meanwhile, is made from Millings made from the reconstruction of New Britain Avenue in Farmington during the summer of 2011. So we're using recycled material to continue and grow our recycling program.
